Ferrari protégé Bortolotti excels at iconic Nurburgring.

08/07/2011

Mirko Bortolotti stamped his dominance on the 2011 FIA Formula Two title with a clean sweep in the eighth and ninth rounds of the championship at Germany’s Nurburgring circuit on 2nd and 3rd July. In the prelude to the next two rounds at Comma’s ‘home’ race at Brands Hatch on July 23rd and 24th, the Austro-Italian – already a member of Ferrari’s prestigious Driver Academy – has stretched a 22 point lead over Switzerland’s Christopher Zanella, both front runners now being comfortably clear of Spain’s Miki Monras in third place. Britain’s leading contender, Will Bratt, enhanced his Spa points haul with another runner-up podium finish in Race 2 to add to his seventh place in the Race 1 and consolidate fourth place in the championship, now just two points behind Monras.

At the half way point of the Championship, Bortolotti now has four wins from eight races, Zanella has two, with Monras and Bratt being the only other drivers to have scored victories so far this season.

Bortolotti and Zanella now look to be likely ‘bookies’ favourites’ to dispute the coveted Williams F1 test drive for the series champion come the end of the season. But with the grids so close, neither can take anything for granted. Can anyone close the gap? Can Will Bratt or any of the other Brits put the brakes on them by exploiting home advantage in the next two rounds on the Grand Prix circuit at Brands Hatch in three weeks time?

Make a date to be there. It’s going to be great racing.
